1982 Tayana 37 'Belo Dia' (USCG #657345, hull 345): Robert Perry cutter, Yanmar repower, lithium + solar, delivered in Colombia under temporary import.

Overview

1982 Tayana 37, USCG #657345, hull 345. Currently in the water at Turtle Cay Marina, Panama. Last haul out two years ago at Bocas Boat Yard. Cutter rig, port galley, quarter-berth layout. Repowered around 2009 with a 4-cylinder Yanmar (low hours), bowsprit replaced, Lofrans windlass installed, Sea Frost refrigeration, LED lighting. Current owner upgrades: 300 Ah lithium house bank + 400 W solar, new starter battery, Nature's Head composting head, new PEX water lines, CPT self steering, new Whaly 310 dinghy with Suzuki outboard, new 2-burner stove/oven, new AIS, USB ports and fans, new fresh-water pump, new prop shaft, coupling, cutlass bearing and PSS seal (see notes), new salon cushions, new Trudesign thru-hulls, running rigging 90% new, Spade anchor. Engine faithfully maintained (impeller included), burns 1.6 L/h at 5–6 knots. Honest: new PSS seal failed (repairable), sails near end of service life (serviced in Colombia ~2023), a pesky deck leak has damaged some cabinet interior veneer, cabin top needs minor glass work and paint, decks are wet (injected as experiment, working), one teak cockpit hatch needs repair (advise all 3), no teak decks, due for haul out and bottom paint, rudder showed minor moisture, working depth finder and AIS only, mast lights to replace, boat is DC only (no shore power, no AC), rudder seal and exhaust mixing valve to replace (spare already on board).

Offshore Pedigree

Designed by Robert Perry and built by Ta Yang in Taiwan, the Tayana 37 is among the most respected production cutters of its era. 'Belo Dia' (USCG #657345, hull 345) has been cared for and modernized by her last two owners with an honest cruising approach — not a boat-show finish.

  • The Tayana 37 counts hundreds of documented circumnavigations.
  • Full keel and balanced cutter rig: forgiving motion in heavy seas.
  • Belo Dia's current setup: solar + lithium + composting + self-steering = a real off-grid cruising profile.
